It looks as though the floods are departing, (for now at least), and some colder weather is on the way instead. Personally, I’m not a ‘good doer’ and tend to suffer a bit in the winter – I only have to look outside and my feet go numb in protest! That means I have to be extra prepared to face the elements, and as a die-hard shopaholic there are a few essential items I have invested in. Maybe some of these will help you do battle this winter?
A good foundation is the best way to start anything – that’s why I have gone for this Mountain Horse base layer. I used this last winter, and it really makes a huge difference.
For riding, waterproof and warm has pretty much been a requirement for the last month! I’ve stocked up with some Rambo waterproof chaps with a warm fleecy lining. I do have some waterproof over-trousers but don’t find them comfortable at all to ride in, so these still allow me the flexibility I need through my seat and hips.
I have also sussed out a few pairs of really great winter breeches on the market at the moment. If you’re going for style, you’d go a long way to beat these Equetech winter breeches which have a water repellent outer, and a fleecy lining for extra warmth. Toggi have their own version, the Toggi Cody breeches which I found at a great price online. They are low rise, not quite as fancy, but certainly very good value for money.
My feet are probably the hardest part of me to keep warm, so I go for some extra thick socks like these Heat Holders. Not only that but if I’m out riding I opt for my super cosy Mountain Horse Rimfrost Rider boots which have a heat insulating soft lining; these are toasty and really hard wearing. I think mine are on their 3rd winter now, so well worth the investment.
As far as coats go, last winter I bought this Joules Dakota 3 in 1 coat at a bargain price from Scats in the end of season sale. It’s proved to be a great thing to have in the car, as you can cater for all types of weather; the quilted inner layer zips in and out depending on how cold it is, and the outer coat is waterproof with a hood so you never need to get caught out again. I often use the quilted part on its own if I just need some warmth, or just use the outer in summertime for showery weather without the bulk.
Not only is it colder, but it’s darker too, so I’ve invested in some hi-vis items to ensure Ruby and I are safe and seen. I opted for this Hi Vis body warmer for myself from Rockfish Rider – in pink, of course. Ruby has a Mark Todd Hi-Viz exercise sheet to help keep her bum dry, warm and well visible to other road users. If we’re not out on the roads and it’s not raining, we tend to use her Rambo Newmarket competition sheet which is really smart.
Last winter I remember taking Willo to a competition, and the weather was just foul. We had lots of envious people wishing they had bought one of these Shires waterproof show sheets along, and we certainly could have done with one at Crofton last week with Daisy!
I personally hate having to do things like buckles when my fingers are frozen, and my Macwet Climatec gloves are the perfect answer; they are water resistant, wind proof, and have a fleece lined material on the back of the glove. They are the perfect glove as far as I’m concerned, as they offer warmth without the bulk that some warmer gloves have, so you can still do fiddly things like doing up bridle straps whilst you’re wearing them.
Last but not least, I do like a top to toe approach, and I can’t bear the horrible ear ache you get when it’s bitterly cold and windy. That’s why I use this Horseware trapper hat as it keeps my ears covered and head toasty too.
