Some of you might already know that my full time day job is working for Macmillan Cancer Support; I'm a regional communications officer, which is basically working on PR and marketing and press work for the central and south west of the country. This is a job I do because I love the work itself, but also because the cause is close to my heart; like many others, I have friends and family who have been touched by cancer, and I have seen first hand how invaluable Macmillan support can be.
This afternoon I got a very unexpected phone call telling me I've been lucky enough to be chosen for the Macmillan 9 furlong charity race at the annual Macmillan York race day on June 14 2014, competing against 11 other successful applicants. It is the largest charity raceday in British racing, and has raised a staggering £5.5million over the past 40 years. Apparently last year the meeting attracted 28,000 visitors...so no biggy. GULP!
I hasten to add that applicants were chosen by York races, and I applied in the same way as all other applicants - I had no inside advantage as am employee of Macmillan.
I know all too well that the charity can only fund the services I work closely with because of the people who fundraise on their behalf. Since starting work for Macmillan over 5 years ago, I've taken part in various fundraising activities, completing the Great South Run, doing charity walks, taking part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning and a lot more besides. Now I have the opportunity to combine my 2 absolute passions; horse riding and a charity very close to my heart.
I have set myself a huge and ambitious target of £5,000, but know what a big difference this could make, and will be taking it very seriously. My first task will be to find a local trainer who would be kind enough to lend me a horse to ride and train on, and the second to find sponsorship to help me reach my target. I am particularly keen on gaining corporate sponsorship, and would be very pleased to speak to any businesses who would like to support such a great cause. I am fully committed to rewarding any corporate sponsors with the publicity and thanks they deserve.
Any support will be very gratefully received and I thank you wholeheartedly in advance for any help you might be able to give in helping me to reach my target. To donate directly please visit my brand new shiny Just Giving page here!
