As Monty had a suspensory injury, I wanted him to have a really full, deep bed covering the whole of the floor for extra support, and since I didn't have enough Aubiose to do that, I used what we had available - straw. I made Ruby's stable up with the Aubiose and had a couple of bags left over. Over the course of the week, I basically had a direct comparison between the two. Here is what I found...
Both beds looked pleasing to they eye at the start; nice big banks and a comfy looking, supportive bed.
Mucking out time:
The difference between the two was really noticeable; the straw bed took about three times as long as the Aubiose, which was only a matter of minutes.
Again, a marked difference. The picture shows a muck-out from the Aubiose stable vs the straw one. The straw bed typically took 1-1.5 barrows of waste, morning and night.
No smell at all with the Aubiose, apart from on the one day where I took out the wet. The straw was pretty potent, and I certainly wouldn't have been able to go to a meeting without a shower first!
One of the big differences was the lack of dust with the Aubiose bed. Poor Monty ended up with a dry cough on the straw after only a few days, and it was visible when I was bedding down.
Over the course of the week, I need four extra bales of straw for Monty(!) to keep it topped up which I hadn't expected, but I suppose was logical with so much waste. Ruby didn't actually need any at all, even after having taken the wet out.
My conclusion was this - if I ever decide to use straw again - shoot me! Having been used to the luxury of mucking out an Aubiose bed, I wasn't prepared for the time and effort it took to muck out a traditional straw bed. I do understand how visually appealing a straw bed can be, done well, but the dust and the lack of absorbency just made it feel really old fashioned and not really up to the job. Of course, it's horses for courses, but for me it just reiterated why I use Aubiose over more traditional bedding types. Zero dust, mega absorbency, minimal waste and effort, and a really luxury comfortable bed.
