I chose Medium front and large hinds for Blue (16.1 TB) and they came up spot on; long enough to offer complete protection, but short enough that they don’t pinch behind the knee on flexion, or to interfere with fetlocks. This is obviously a major factor as when jumping and galloping the fetlocks come under extreme pressure and need full freedom to flex almost 90 degrees through the joint.
There is plenty of adjustment in the Velcro, which is reinforced so you can cut off any excess without fraying. Unlike my previous boots which were pretty rigid from top to bottom, these are much more flexible and the inner material is soft and squidgy (technical term) so it basically moulds to fit the contour of the horse’s leg which I love. This helps keep them in place as they find their natural place and stay there. I guess this is the stealth part – they’re so lightweight and unobtrusive that you wouldn’t know they’re there.
The lower strap fits at an angle to follow the contour of the leg, and the middle strap is elasticated which allows a really snug fit which you need xc. We jumped, hacked, schooled, cantered through fields, splashed through puddles and had zero slippage.

Impact protection is a big deal – those solid xc fences do not give. These boots have hard strike guard strips which protect the tendons and canon bones from external impact, and they’re so tough that they actually come with a lifetime guarantee.
Even though they’re made of really tough stuff, everything is made with ventilation in mind; a durable mesh outer, over and a highly breathable perforated fabric – the air part of the name. This keeps the legs cool and reduces the risk of soft tissue injury (read more here). And, they’ve even used fabric which resists uptake of water, so they won’t become sodden and heavy after you’ve bossed the water complex.
These boots weren’t made for walking. They were made for jumping, galloping, water, mud and generally kicking ass. It seems like LeMieux have thought of everything – but they’re the perfect juxtaposition. Tough but lightweight and flexible. Heavy duty protection combined with extreme ventilation. Really smart but built to withstand abuse. Made for XC but versatile enough to use for hacking, flatwork or showjumping too.
Honestly – there’s nothing I don’t like about them. Bravo LeMieux, these are clever. Horsehealth.co.uk might be more well known for matchy matchy dressage wear or showjumping style, but these xc boots prove they have got the eventing market covered too.
